Tackling complacent leadership
With Stephen Mayne, Crikey founder and Australia's leading shareholder activist

The top end of corporate Australia has long been a cosy club with a small number of chummy directors sitting on big boards. Shareholders didn't react! Rupert Murdoch was asked one question in 7 years ? and then Stephen Mayne started coming to News Corp AGMs!

Over breakfast Stephen will entertain you on his decade of stirring, whistleblowing, publishing and activism including:

? What it is like tackling powerful billionaires like Rupert Murdoch, Frank Lowy and Kerry Packer at AGMs.

? How he upset many of Australia's leading political and media figures through Crikey.

? The lessons learnt from becoming Australia's most unsuccessful board candidate after 40 defeats, including 29 public companies.

? Why corporate Australia would perform better with a stronger culture of shareholder activism.

About Stephen Mayne

Stephen Mayne is a Walkley Award winning journalist who for 10 years worked as a reporter, business editor and chief of staff for various newspapers.

A former press secretary in Jeff Kennett's media unit, Stephen ratted on his former boss in 1997 by going on 4 Corners as a whistleblower about the Premier's share dealings. He subsequently launched www.crikey.com.au in February 2000. After many battles both personal and public, Crikey was sold for a significant value.

Crikey is now Australia's best known independent corporate critique with 15,000 paying subscribers for daily emails and more than 1.5 million page views per month.

Stephen still contributes to Crikey and is now pursuing shareholder activism through his new corporate governance e-zine, www.maynereport.com.

For the past 8 years he has appeared regularly on 702 ABC Sydney radio.

In the next few weeks he will be nominating for various boards including the ASX and Centro.
